The Basic Attendance Percentage Formula

Your attendance percentage is calculated using a simple ratio:

Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100

Classes Attended is the number of scheduled sessions where you were marked present. Total Classes Held is every class that actually took place — regardless of whether you attended or not. Cancelled classes, public holidays, and classes officially called off by the institution are not counted.

Quick Example

You've attended 63 classes out of 80 held so far.

( 63 ÷ 80 ) × 100 = 78.75%

Round to one decimal place for display — your institution's system may round differently.

Formula 2: Classes Needed to Hit a Target

If you want to find out how many more classes you need to attend to reach or maintain a target percentage, rearrange the formula:

Classes Needed = ceil( (Target% × Total Future − 100 × Already Attended) / (100 − Target%) )

This is the "recovery" formula — it tells you the minimum number of future consecutive classes you must attend to pull your percentage up to the target.

Example: Recovery from 68%

Current: 68 attended out of 100 held (68%)

Target: 75%

Classes Needed = ceil( (75 × ? − 100 × 68) / (100 − 75) )

Here, "?" is the new total. Since each new class adds 1 to both attended and total, we solve algebraically:

0.75 × (100 + n) ≤ 68 + n → n ≥ 28

You need to attend 28 consecutive classes without a single absence to recover to 75%.

Formula 3: How Many Can You Still Miss?

If you're currently above 75% and want to know the maximum absences you can afford:

Max Skippable = floor( (Attended × 100 / Target%) − Total Held )

If this returns a negative number, you're already below the target and need to attend rather than skip. See the recovery formula above.

How Lab Sessions Change the Calculation

Lab sessions complicate things because they consume multiple schedule slots but count as a specific number of attendance points. Most colleges treat each lab as 2 lectures for attendance purposes, though this varies.

On days with a lab, your effective lecture count is different from days without:

Example: 6 lectures/day + 1 lab (equivalent = 2)

  • Regular day: 6 attendance points
  • Lab day: 6 + 2 = 8 attendance points total
  • • Missing lab day = missing 8 points instead of 6

Bunk Karo lets you configure "Slots Consumed" (how many schedule slots the lab occupies) and "Lab Equivalent" (how many attendance points it counts as), so your calculation accounts for your college's specific policy.

Subject-Wise vs. Overall Attendance

Most Indian universities apply the 75% rule per subject, not to an overall aggregate. This means:

  • You could have 82% overall attendance and still be detained if you have 72% in one subject
  • The formula applies independently to each subject's class count
  • Skipping classes unevenly (always skipping one subject) puts you at higher risk than spreading absences across subjects

Run the calculator separately for subjects where you've been missing more classes to check your standing in each one.
